Aging oil fired steel boilers were replaced in a series of low rise Armour Group apartment buildings, in total nine Weil McLain Ultra Series 3 310 natural gas condensing boilers were retrofit into existing high temperature heating systems.
A Brief Case Study – Building 200
In 2008, this building had consumed 41,600 litres of heating oil, or roughly $30,500. From January 1st to September 11th 2009 the same building has consumed 767 Gj of natural gas, the equivalent of around 20,000 litres of oil. Considering the reduced cost of natural gas vs oil and the increased efficiency of the system, the building stands to save roughly $20,000 dollars for the year. The total cost of the project was $24,000.
In the apartment directly above the boiler room, the tenant had previously complained about the excessive heat when the steel boilers ran. She now has full control over the temperature of her apartment thanks to the significantly reduced jacket heat loss from the new Ultra boilers.
